The White Getaway Part 2:

Lake Akan

Guessed we had the best sleep among all the nights in Hokkaido..
Concussed from the deficiency on the plane..

Feeling really refreshed..

Photobucket

We forgot to bring the bottle of water to the hotel room in our hurry the previous night..
This was what we found early morning.
Below freezing point.

Photobucket

As we drove off towards Lake Akan..
We tried to find the shoe plaza we came across the previous night but without avail..
Someone's shoes were disintegrating and held only by Japanese superglue hurhurhur..
Moral of the story..
"Do not wear boots that you have not worn for three years back to the same freezing country" :P

There were a lot of traffic junctions at Obihiro.
Cos of the snow,
We kept beating the red lights
And we kept stopping at the green lights..
We could not see the traffic junction line at all.

The same driving experience, the same toll gates..

Photobucket

Along the expressway..
We saw a lot of cars going into the P lane..
Curious, we followed suit.

Photobucket

The line of colorful vending machines awaited us..
Together with an extremely clean male and female toilets..
As we came out of the toilets
We saw the cleaning lady walking towards her mini van and off she drove.
They actually have toilet staff moving around maintaining the toilets along the expressway o.0

We got into a crappy good mood..

Photobucket

After driving for another half an hour or so..
We passed many closed farms..
Those big fields were filled with untouched snow..
So mesmerizing..
Till...

Photobucket

The glare was glistening across those fields and fields of snow..

Photobucket

The majestic Mount Meakan and Akan Fuji in the distance :)

Photobucket

The first time I saw deers..
Not skinny ones in the zoo.
But chubby deers which roam around freely in the woods..

Those deer crossing signs by the roads,
Became a real necessity..

Ezo Deers :)

Photobucket

Photobucket

It did not snow that day.
The sun was high up making its presence well known among the sparsely scattered clouds..

Photobucket

Tom Cruise wannabe :P

Photobucket

As we drove into towards the Kushiro City into the woods..
We suddenly felt the Xmas ambience..

Photobucket

-The lignosa of a red Ezo spruce to the front of Mt. Meakan-

The alley of real Xmas trees :)

We were looking for the Crane Reserve but to no avail.
They had a few reserves for the cranes but we kept getting dead ends.
Either they were closed or the GPS announced a location in the middle of the woods.

Then we saw another P.
Turned in to take a break from driving..

This stop had a decent looking souvenir and snacks shop.
So we thought we could stop to have some snacks as lunch.
Little did we know that we were actually at the entrance of the Akan International Crane Centre!

Photobucket

The Red-crowned Crane is one of the biggest birds in Japan at 140-150cm and with wingspan of 220-240 cm.
The entire body is white, while from bill to neck and a part of wings are black, and the top of the head is red.
From its characteristic head color originates the Japanese name of "Tancho"('tan'= red, 'cho'=top).
It is a resident species in Japan and Kushiro Shitsugen is their largest habitat.

Landscape shot :)

Photobucket

In that unbearable cold..
Camera men lined the viewing bay with their huge ass DSLR with their equally or even bigger lens..
Just to take beautiful pictures of the cranes in action..
Especially feeding time at 1pm and 4pm respectively :)

We then chose another quiet spot..
Took out our convenient tripod..
And started goofing around..

Photobucket

Photobucket

The cranes chose to remain oblivious to the attention they are given..
And continued to laze around..
Perfect for a sunny Sunday weather.

Photobucket

Hoping to capture them spread their wings as they fly from one sanctuary to another..
I whipped out my camera in the fastest possible way and got this shot :)
They are really huge..

Photobucket

Took a little break back indoors..
Sipped some warm water from the thermal flasks..
And off we go again..

Photobucket

Photobucket

*****

The trees looked differently at different zones..
We had seen so many different trees in just a simple day of self drive..

Photobucket

We finally reached our second hotel destination at 4:30 pm.

Hotel Akankoso

A pleasant welcome dessert :)
-Milk pudding with heart shaped strawberry jam-

Photobucket

In the room,
Hot water awaits us..
Even though we were half an hour later than the time we said we would arrive.
That was how good the service is.

Hotel Akankoso is one of the many hotels that lined Lake Akan..
In winter,
The lake completely freezes over during the winter..
Snow enthusiasts will pitch tents on the lake
And there will be winter sports such as smelt ice fishing, skating and snowmobiling..

The view from the hotel room.

Beautiful sunset :)

Photobucket

Photobucket

More welcome snacks in the room..

Photobucket

Took a little rest with the snacks and warm green tea..
Then we piled on layers and took another walk to the Aiun Kotan Village before our dinner..

Photobucket

Photobucket

Ainu Kotan Village

Photobucket

The shops had similar souvenirs.
Perhaps it was a popular tourist spot
The things were not cheap.

Photobucket

At -15 degrees,
Our gloves could not do much for our poor fingers..
With freezing knees and toes..
We kept running into the shops to keep warm.
The roads were icy and we slipped many times.

Photobucket

Back at the hotel

Red faces with tearing eyes and running nose..

Photobucket

And crapping around again..
I was in total black three years ago..
Hurhurhur..

Photobucket

Dinner by Hotel Akankoso

Different chefs will be in charge of different menus..
So our dinner will be pre-selected for us depending which chef is on shift.

Photobucket

We got a pleasant surprise when we arrived at the dining hall..
How to finish all..??!

Photobucket

14 courses i think..
Our sides were bursting.

Photobucket

Took a break after dinner..
These were the prettiest yukatas I've ever seen..

Photobucket

Outdoor hot spring to end the night :)

A Much Needed Getaway, Hokkaido Once Again

It wasn't a honeymoon, nor a romantic getaway.
Because this trip was mmm, not the usual kind for a city dweller.
No shopping, no buildings..
We were free from the concrete jungle..

We felt a sense of familiarity yet at the same time more mystical than ever.

We shut ourselves from all internet, all phone calls.
Scaling the mountains, gliding down the gorges.
Rolling in the snow fields, watching deers cranes and foxes brush us by..
A trip that incites the 5 senses.
We did it the Japan Hour way, with a tinge of adventure.
This adventure is absolutely what I wanted in a trip..
Exploring a country in depth, not mere touch and go.

Everything so white and pure..
Nature seemed to be touched by the hands of Gods who loved white so much that they sprinkled beautiful light flakes that binds together significantly.
Roads are so straight the hugged the curves of Earth.
We get to see the end of the road where the sky meets the Earth.
Every angle, every dimension tells a story of the trees.
From Spring to Autumn to Winter..
These are trees that embrace change gracefully.

The White Getaway Part 1:

Obihiro

Departure

As I fought the endless trouble that brewed at work..
We struggled to leave office on time.
Rushed home, changed to my running gear..
Off for an hour run.

After checking and re-checking the luggage
We finally board the cab.

Photobucket

I wanted to travel light on board.
So I checked everything in.
Trying to make ourselves as comfortable as possible for the overnight flight.

We woke up to this :)

Photobucket

ANA had two delays.
We were already delirious with exhaustion..
So the disappointment with the airline was easily enhanced.
Our connecting flight buffer time was reduced from ninety minutes to twenty minutes.
We practically dashed from check points to check points.
They made up their delay with another delay on the connecting flight so that the 5 pairs of passengers could make it in time.

As the plane descends through the clouds..

Photobucket

Photobucket

*****

We were famished by the time we collected our luggage.
Walked around a little..
New Chitose Airport did not change much.
Big groups of skiers lugged their huge ass ski bags from point to point with style and charisma..
My urge to ski was re-ignited.

Lunch at the airport was surprisingly good and cheap.

Tenpura prawn rice with Udon bowl

Photobucket

Lobster rice bowl

Photobucket

Before the last trip, I did not like ramen.
But I was changed.
Before this trip, I did not like Udon.
But again, I was changed.
I just had not come across a tasty Udon bowl in Sg.

A Santouka ramen bowl already cost us 1100 yen.
This entire meal (2 sets) cost us a mere 1500 yen.

Photobucket

This sumptuous meal easily taste better than 90% of the Japanese restaurants in Sg..
And the chef was a young lass with thick make up :)

We took out our scarves, ear muffs, gloves..
Changed into my boots..
We went out of the airport to see how cold was it.

Photobucket

Thinking to ourselves,
"Ok we can survive for the time being without more inner wear since we would drive straight to the hotel"
(We only learnt that we were so wrong after reaching the first hotel)

*****

As we went to fetch our rental car..

Photobucket

The original plan was to go straight to Akan after we touched down.
From New Chitose, it was not possible in that 6 hours drive.
We may end up getting caught in the dark since nightfall begins at 3:30pm.
So we had to stop over some where.

It's a wonder how we entered a mountain tunnel with clear skies and no snow..
Only to come out at the other end of the mountain foot with heavy snow and poor visibility..
Quite an apprehensive drive if you ask me..
From SG roads to these roads..
We barely slept on the plane, the roads are slippery, we can't see shit.
An adaptation of extreme climate change..
It was a good thing we did not attempt the 6 hours drive to Akan.

Photobucket

After half an hour's drive later..
We went into another tunnel and we came out to another world.
The skies were finally clear..
But nightfall began.

Photobucket

After more wrong turns and slippery skids..
We finally made out our destination.

Obihiro

Located around 3 hours away from New Chitose Airport..
The only designated city in the Tokachi area..
At least,
The close proximity allowed us to get used to driving in that thick snowfall.

When we reached the hotel,
The car park was quite a walking distance away.

Photobucket

The plan was to go to the boot to get our luggage and go straight to check in without our down jackets.
The minute we stepped out into the cold..
WE FROZE!!

There was no way we can make it to the hotel lobby without suffering from hypothermia.
In that shivering state..
We went back into the car shut the doors and quickly put on our down jackets..
Then we went back out again did a half run to the lobby dragging our luggage.
The temperature is..
Insane.

After check in..
We piled on layers on ourselves and stepped out back into the cold..
Wanted to check out Kita no Yatai for dinner.
An alleyway of unique food stands that is open all year-round, and offers foods from many different countries.
But it was very hard to locate that area in the dark cold night.

We must be the only two fellas who braced the cold at that hour cos the streets were all empty.

Found this shop that sells Taiyaki (たい焼き)..
Never had we come across such generous fillings that are oozing out with every bite..

Photobucket

We bought Oden (おでん) from Lawson food cart too..
This Japanese winter dish resembles Yong Tau Hu..
It consists several ingredients such as boiled eggs (玉子), daikon radish (大根), konnyaku, konbu (昆布) and processed fish cakes stewed in a light, soy-flavoured dashi broth.
Very light and savoury :)

Photobucket

Hokkaido Hotel (Obihiro)

I thought this hotel was worth mentioning.
Its red brick exterior made it stand out in the cold city..
Love the outdoor hot spring bath too..
And needless to say,
Service was impeccable.

Photobucket
-Adapted from the website-

The room..

Photobucket

The entire hotel exterior

The Hidaka Wing is a popular choice for hosting weddings because of its arches :)

Photobucket

And the morning view..

Photobucket

So we bid goodbye to our first stop and set off for Lake Akan..
The hotel staff of Hokkaido hotel stood outside watching and waving till we drove off..

We are loving every bit of this trip..
