PMCS Cruise Episode 2010

I have not been on a cruise ship prior to this trip..
This time round I heard
After a series of HR meetings and objections and suggestions..
The company finally settled on cruise over Batam or Bintan.

Star Virgo

The biggest ship by far of the Star Cruises group.
On a very tiring Friday evening (we still had to work in the morning)
We got onboard and took pictures with the star cruise mascots and dancers.

Upon checking into the cabin..
Both the mountain tortoise me and colleague began taking pictures of the cabin.
Hurhurhur..

Photobucket

The cabin was bigger than what I had expected though the bed was too narrow..
Most likely to end up on the floor if you made a full 360 turn..
No wonder many colleagues complain about stiff bodies and neck aches.

Walked around the ship before dinner..
Got acquainted with directions..

We were supposed to gather at one of the restaurants “Bella Vista” for company dinner in casual smart wear.
Collared shirts only,
No berms and open toed footwear allowed.

Photobucket

Dinner was served at a very dimly lighted location.
So dim that I mistook a chilli as a capsicum.
And that burning sensation left me in tears.

A six course meal that was not satisfying at all.
Because practically every colleague I bumped into thereafter had to take supper..
They were all grumbling about the dinner..
All claiming they were damn hungry.

After some magic show,
Dear and I settled supper at Blue Lagoon for some porridge buffet..
Thinking finally they served decent food.
Halfway through,
We realized the buffet cost $12 per pax (excluding 15% service charge)..
o.0

So we stuffed ourselves silly..
Another colleague walked past us and affirmatively told us free food doesn’t taste good there.
LOL..

We checked out the top deck after dinner..
As well as the smoky (pun intended) casino.

The Casino experience

The screen of smoke as a veil at the entrance..
The first sights that hit me, the first to greet.
The smell of cigarettes, impossible to miss.
The incessant sound of chips counting machines, evident.
Foreheads scrunched up distastefully in concentration..
Cold sweat broke out, blood pressures went up.
Ears and nerves succumbed to exasperation.

As I penetrated through the crowd..
Indonesian Chinese were evenly distributed..
Mostly fair skinned women who carried conspicuous LV bags,
And they donned thick curls complimented by big sunglasses..

Everything about them was huge.
They took out huge stacks of huge notes from their huge LV bags,
Untied the rubber bands that held the notes and laid them on the gambling desk.
Quite a scene as they changed them to chips..

What art thou, Addiction?
Plunging frail men into the abyss of greed..

One of our bosses stayed at his poker table throughout the entire first night..
Without taking a single wink, he continued his game after the next day’s breakfast.
Another colleague followed suit and induced a third colleague to borrow more.
Addiction, addiction..
All of them lost 1k plus each at least.

*****

After breakfast the second day
We walked around again, waiting for the company event to start.
Tossed the flint stone kid around..

Photobucket

These kids reminded me of the nostalgic times when we were the ones being tossed around by our parents.
Fat cheeks, small hands, fat tummies..
But nevertheless, cute.
Yes, innocently cute.

Photobucket

We checked out the "bridge" of the ship.
I have absolutely no idea why it's called the bridge..

Photobucket

They gave out the 5 year and 10 year awards too =)

Photobucket

When it was time for games...
The very first game..
10 people in a group, two groups in total.
Each group had to select a representative..
That person got to stand in the middle of the stage and allowed the rest of the group members to tie rubber bands on the hair.
The more the rubber bands, the better.

Photobucket

After the games,
The bosses gave out 200 ang bao per employee..
So out came 3 groups of people who dealt with the extra cash differently.

The 3 groups

(Group 1) The Aunties
(Group 2) The Bangladesh and foreign Indian technicians
(Group 3) The Commoners.

Choices of activities

(A) Kept the money for other expenses on board
(B) Went to the casino for some small luck, but lost all 200 bucks grumpily and quickly left the casino..
(C) Gathered around the bar and opened bottles and bottles of Martini and Chivas

Try matching A, B, C to the respective groups =p

*****

After lunch,
I walked around aimlessly..
Read a little of A Thousand Splendid Suns..
And walked around aimlessly.
Played a little table tennis with the guys..
Walked around aimlessly..

Photobucket

Went in and out of the casino to look for familiar faces..
Anyone at all..
And unknowingly,
I brought A Thousand Splendid Suns into the casino.
Took me a while to realise why my colleagues were hushing me about it
I actually brought a book into the casino =p

In the gambling den,
I'm really awed by how sensitive the usually insensitive people could get..
You can touch them slightly by the shoulders to see how high they jump.

Dinner and rain came together.
Hence the scheduled BBQ dinner was cancelled.
Everyone scattered.
So we began hunting for the lost souls.
Dinner resumed at the same first night's location..
Dress code was supposed to be casual smart..
How biased it was when the smart dress code strictly remained for guys..
But the ladies had their western three course dinner in in shorts and slippers..
LOL

Night fell.
Besides waiting for the topless show, I had absolutely nothing to do.
The KTV bunch were puffing cigarettes and downing drinks like there's no tomorrow.
The other bunch rented the majong table and played through the wee hours..
The remaining group tried to recover their 1k losses by spamming the games at the casino.

I walked aimlessly.

And yes,
I checked out the topless show close to midnight..
The show wasnt free.
SGD 38.00 per tix.

Their outifts were designed in such a way that the dancers were not that sleazy.
Stage lights made the boobs blend into the outlandish outfits..
Other than the show was supposed to be a topless dance show,
I could not really see the purpose for stripping.
It was an experience, though.

*****

Finally time's up for departure.
WooOOoo..
As we closed in to the dock,
I saw this beautiful sail.
The people on board were waving at us..

Photobucket

Photobucket

If you ask me
The cruise was not a bad idea for a one time experience.
The company spoilt us loads.
But 500 plus per pax after taxes and surcharges is definitely not worth it for a true blue getaway..
Definitely not for a cruise with bland food and tasteless coffee and tea.
Because dear and I went straight to Starbucks immediately after disembarking.
And I have not walked so much in an enclosed area before.

So will I ever go for a cruise again?
Probably..naught.
